Private number plates are now thought of as vital by many car owners. As far as car parts go, attractive number plates can really make your car stand out from the rest. Minor cosmetic touches and detailed styling on a car may be subtle and easily missed. However, people always seem to pay attention to a special number plate on a vehicle whenever they see one.
So which combination should you go for? There are literally millions of different combinations available. You may go for your name, initials or even your favourite sports team. Some individuals like to go for private number plates that are particular to their make of car or motorbike.
What amount of money should you spend? It all depends on how exclusive you want your personal number plates to be. The DVLA offers a good range of private registrations starting from as low as two hundred and fifty pounds. More exclusive combinations are available from professional number plate dealers with asking prices as high as a few hundred thousand pounds.
What determines the price? Many factors play a part in the valuation of a number plate. Supply and demand is one factor. On the supply side, if you are looking to buy a DS registration and there lots on the market, you may be able to negotiate a good deal for yourself. Demand for popular sets of initials such as DJB and AJS is always strong and as a result these combinations always cost more than not so popular initials such as YNL or FGU.
Who should I buy my personal number plate from? The totally obvious answer is to buy from wherever is offering you the best deal. Private number plates are commonly offered for sale in car magazines, motoring sections of particular newspapers and on internet auction websites. Do remember the well-known saying, ‘if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is’. If you see an advert in the classifieds section of the local newspaper offering the private number plate MVW 1 for eight hundred pounds, be on your guard.
What about buying from a personalised number plate dealer? You may feel more secure buying from a registered dealer who has lots of years of experience buying and selling cherished registrations. To offer additional safeguards to the buyer, some dealers choose to become members of trade associations such as APRT, CNDA or MIRAD.
Is there any inside information? The best advice is to make sure you display your new number plates correctly. If you intentionally adjust the way the letters or numbers are displayed, or add a fixing bolt in a place where it does not belong, you may be fined or even worse have the rights to your private number plates taken away from you.
Is there anything else I should consider? Always contact your motor insurer and any recovery organisations you belong to when you replace your vehicle registration. There may be a small charge of around ten pounds from your motor insurer to issue replacement policy documents.
